Lake Studies Institute (Limnological Institute) in Irkutsk was established in<br />

1961 on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baikal Limnological Station <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR.<br />

[Grachev, Mikhail A., D. Biochem. S. Born in 1939. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bichemistry, Biophysics, and Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically Active Compounds <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987. Biochemist. Specialist in bioorganic chemical<br />

fermentation and analytical chemistry. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1961 and began working at <strong>the</strong> Natural Compounds Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

AN SSSR. From 1965 <strong>to</strong> 1984, he headed a labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Organic Chemistry, heading also a Labora<strong>to</strong>ry in Ultra-microbiochemistry at <strong>the</strong><br />

Novosibirsk Institute <strong>of</strong> Bioorganic Chemistry from 1984 <strong>to</strong> 1987. In 1987, he<br />

became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Limnological Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong><br />

located in Irkutsk. He has authored and co-authored some 111 scientific works <strong>of</strong><br />

which three are major monographs. He has supervised <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> ten aspirants for<br />

<strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He is on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on Analytical Chemistry. He<br />

received a State Prize in 1985. In December 1990, <strong>the</strong> Baikal International Center<br />

for Ecological Research was established under Grachev’s direction at ceremonies<br />

attended by representatives from nine countries. He was made <strong>the</strong> Executive<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> BICER that is located at <strong>the</strong> Limnological Institute in Irkutsk, Russia.<br />
