Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR Institute in Moscow that was created in 1968. It<br />

is a major source <strong>of</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical and demographic research in Russia.<br />

Poliakov, Iurii A., D. Hist. S. Born in 1921 in Tashkent. <strong>Russian</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rian.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1966. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry department at Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1945. He has<br />

taught at Moscow <strong>University</strong> and at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social sciences where he has<br />

been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 1970. Since 1949, he has worked at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. From 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1969, he was edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

journal Is<strong>to</strong>riia SSSR (His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR). His works deal with <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Oc<strong>to</strong>ber Revolution and <strong>the</strong> Civil War in <strong>the</strong> USSR, <strong>the</strong> reconstruction period,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet peasantry. (GSE 20, P. 323.)<br />

Starushenko, Gleb B., D. Iur. S. Born in 1922. Corresponding member since 1984.<br />

Since 1966, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Africa Institute in Moscow. The<br />

institute was created in 1959 <strong>to</strong> research <strong>the</strong> economic, socio-political l,<br />

international, his<strong>to</strong>rical l, and cultural l-ethnological problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African states.<br />

It coordinates its work with <strong>the</strong> scientists in <strong>the</strong> Oriental Institute. It also maintains a<br />

branch in St. Petersburg. Starshenko heads <strong>the</strong> study and research <strong>of</strong> social and<br />

class structures in Africa and <strong>the</strong> revolutionary processes on that continent for <strong>the</strong><br />

institute.<br />

Tulepbaev, Baidabek A. Born in 1921. Since 1975, academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Social science<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kazakh <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> Leading Research Institutes:<br />

As can be seen, his<strong>to</strong>ry in Russia has included ethnography, archaeology, area study<br />

institutes, General his<strong>to</strong>ry, and his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union. When <strong>the</strong> entire country<br />

is considered, <strong>the</strong>re are 32 research institutes located in 23 cities that fall under <strong>the</strong><br />

broad definitions <strong>of</strong> what constitutes his<strong>to</strong>ry in <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union. A scanning<br />
