<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1957 <strong>to</strong> 1966. In 1966, he moved <strong>to</strong> Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k <strong>to</strong><br />

become founding Direc<strong>to</strong>r (in 1970) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Marine Biology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> Far Eastern Department (<strong>the</strong>n Far Eastern Scientific<br />

Center). His works are in cell physiology, <strong>the</strong> experimental ecology <strong>of</strong> Marine<br />

animals, cellular ecology, and general and comparative physiology. He was<br />

replaced as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marine Biology Institute in 1988. He holds <strong>the</strong> Chair in<br />

Marine Biology at <strong>the</strong> Far East State <strong>University</strong>. He has authored some 270<br />

Altukhov, Iurii P. Born in 1936. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Biology<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. He has been a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Genetics Institute in Moscow since 1975. He is currently <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that<br />

institute, now called <strong>the</strong> N. I Vavilov General Genetics Institute.<br />

Andreev, Lev. N., C. Bio. S. Born in 1931. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1984. Since 1981, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Main Botanical Garden in Moscow. Founded in 1945 and opened <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

public in 1959. Special collections at <strong>the</strong> gardens include native flora <strong>of</strong> Russia,<br />

trees and shrubs, ornamental perennials, tropical and subtropical plants, cacti and<br />

succulents, cultivated plants such as cereal, fruit, berry, vegetables, and medicinal<br />

plants. There are some 267,000 specimens in <strong>the</strong> herbarium, and some 16,500<br />

specimens in <strong>the</strong> horticultural herbarium. He is currently a Deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Andriashev, Ana<strong>to</strong>lii P., D. Bio. S. Born in 1910. <strong>Russian</strong> ichthyologist and<br />

zoogeographer. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1966. He graduated from Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> in 1933 and<br />

worked <strong>the</strong>re until 1939. He later worked at <strong>the</strong> Sevastapol Biological Station and<br />

in 1944, at <strong>the</strong> Zoological Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

(1955-56) and <strong>the</strong> third (1957-58) Antarctic expeditions and served as <strong>the</strong> USSR<br />

representative on <strong>the</strong> International Committee for <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arctic. Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Botanical Garden in Moscow. Since 1973, he has been a senior researcher<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Ichthyology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zoology Institute. (GSE 2, p. 93.)<br />

Darevskii, Ilia S., D. Bio. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Biology<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December <strong>of</strong> 1987. Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Herpe<strong>to</strong>logy and<br />

Ornithology Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zoological Institute in St. Petersburg since 1967. In<br />

1987, he was <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I. I. Mechnikov Prize in biology for his research<br />

Gorlenko, Mikhail V. Born in 1908 in Vladimir. <strong>Russian</strong> mycologist and phy<strong>to</strong>pathologist.<br />

Corresponding member since 1976. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Voronezh in 1930. From 1931 <strong>to</strong> 1941, he was a researcher at <strong>the</strong> Voronezh<br />

Plant Protection Station. From 1941 <strong>to</strong> 1955, he headed <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Moscow Plant Protection Station at <strong>the</strong> All-Union Institute <strong>of</strong> Plant Protection. In<br />

1948, he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that station. He was named Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subdepartment <strong>of</strong> lower plants at Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1955. His studies are<br />

in immunity <strong>of</strong> plants <strong>to</strong> fungus and bacterial diseases and <strong>the</strong> origin and evolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> parasitism in phy<strong>to</strong>pathogenic micro-organisms. (GSE 30, p. 387.)<br />
