<strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. Since 1982, he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lithosphere Institute<br />

in Moscow which was established in 1979 <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> sedimentary and<br />

metamorphic rock and ore formation.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />

department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern department since<br />

December 1987. Since 1988, he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tec<strong>to</strong>nics and<br />

Geophysics Institute in Khabarovsk. which was founded in 1971 and is<br />

subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. Its scientists study <strong>the</strong><br />

deep tec<strong>to</strong>nics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth's crust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> continent and Pacific ocean; determine <strong>the</strong><br />

relationship between <strong>the</strong> geophysical fields and structures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth's crust;<br />

develop estimates <strong>of</strong> mineral deposits from <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> tec<strong>to</strong>nic and geophysical<br />

Bronnikov, Dmitrii M. Born in 1913. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology,<br />

Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1979. Since 1981, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Complex Utilization <strong>of</strong> Mineral<br />

Resources Institute in Moscow which was established in 1978 <strong>to</strong> research <strong>the</strong>ories<br />

<strong>of</strong> gas filtration and new methods for exploiting mineral resources. It is subordinate<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry department.<br />

Bulanzhe, Iurii D., D. PM. S. Born in 1911 in Moscow. Soviet geophysicist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1966. Originally elected <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physics<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth department. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Geodetic Institute in 1934<br />

and started work at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR, becoming<br />

a department Head in 1956. Since 1956, he has been Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gravimetry and<br />

Geomagnetism Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O. Iurii Shmidt Earth Physics Institute in<br />

Moscow. His works include experimental studies in gravimetrics and <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

deformations in <strong>the</strong> earth's crust. He has been Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Geodetic<br />

Society and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Association <strong>of</strong> Geodesy since 1957. (GSE 4, p.<br />

Bulashevich, Iurii P. Born in 1911 in Nizhny Novgorod, now Gorkiy. Soviet<br />

geophysicist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry,<br />

and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1970. He is also a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Scientific Center. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kazan in 1935<br />

and started work at <strong>the</strong> Urals Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. In 1958, he became <strong>the</strong><br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that department's Institute <strong>of</strong> Geophysics which since 1971 has been<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geophysics. In 1952, he became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong><br />

Sverdlovsk Pedagogical Institute and later pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Sverdlovsk Mining<br />

Institute. His main works are in geophysical methods <strong>of</strong> studying <strong>the</strong> earth's crust<br />

and <strong>the</strong> exploration and analysis <strong>of</strong> useful mineral deposits. (GSE, 30, p. 29.)<br />

Geodekian, Artem A., D. GM. S. Born in 1914. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1979. Since 1975, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. P.<br />

Shirshov Oceanology Institute in Moscow and since 1979, he has served as Chief<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geochemistry Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanography Institute as well as Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Petroleum in <strong>the</strong> Sea Labora<strong>to</strong>ry. The Shirshov Oceanology Institute is <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

<strong>Russian</strong> research institute for <strong>the</strong> marine sciences. It was created in 1946, and is<br />

subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography<br />

department. It was named after Shirshov in 1967.<br />
