Vol’pin (Volpin), Mark E., D. Chem. S. Born in 1923. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

and Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December 1987. Since<br />

1967, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. N. Nesmeianov Elemen<strong>to</strong>organic<br />

Compounds Institute in Moscow. Corresponding member since 1979. In 1982, he<br />

was <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. N. Nesmeianov Gold Medal for his work in chemistry.<br />

The award was named after <strong>the</strong> renowned organic chemist. He is presently direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. N. Nesmeyanov (Nesmeianov) Institute <strong>of</strong> Organo-element Compounds<br />

(INEOS) located in Moscow.<br />

Retrospect: Established in 1955. Research on hetero-organic compounds, elemen<strong>to</strong>-organic,<br />

metalo-organic and polymer chemistry and <strong>the</strong> chemistry <strong>of</strong> viscosemolecular<br />

formation. Subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's General and Technical<br />

Chemistry Department. Major General Aleksandr V. Fokin, D. Chem. S., was<br />

been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute from 1981 <strong>to</strong> 1988; since 1988, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r has been<br />
