National Research in <strong>the</strong> Information <strong>Sciences</strong>, Computer Technology, and<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>mation <strong>Sciences</strong>: Locations <strong>of</strong> institutes where computer sciences are<br />

studied and used may be seen this <strong>the</strong> map reproduced here. As it shows, <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

37 computer technology, information sciences, and au<strong>to</strong>mated systems research<br />

institutes located in 19 cities in <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union. Some cities have more than<br />

one institute. Moscow has a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 13. Chernogolovka, Yaroslavl, St. Petersburg,<br />

Tbilisi, and Novosibirsk have two. These three areas <strong>of</strong> science are strongest in<br />

those cities with <strong>the</strong> largest number <strong>of</strong> physics, ma<strong>the</strong>matics, and astronomy<br />

research centers in <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
