"Vos<strong>to</strong>k": Manager V. A. Vorobjev--located in <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Primorye in <strong>the</strong> vicinity <strong>of</strong><br />

Nakhodka--studies <strong>the</strong> ecology, biochemistry, genetics and embryology <strong>of</strong> marine<br />

invertebrates;<br />

Biological Field Station "Stark": Manager V. E. Rube--located on Popov Island near<br />

Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k--studies comparative physiology <strong>of</strong> marine animals, ecology,<br />

physiology and biophysics <strong>of</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>syn<strong>the</strong>sis in marine algae;<br />

Biological Field Station "Sokol": Cura<strong>to</strong>r A. A. Maximovich is located on Sakhalin<br />

and researches population genetics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Salmon;<br />

Biological Station "Raduga": Manager V. V. Il'in--is located on Kamchatka---studies<br />

SOME HISTORICAL INFORMATION<br />

The Pacific waters <strong>of</strong> Russia are <strong>of</strong> special interest for marine biologists. These waters are<br />

inhabited by flora and fauna <strong>of</strong> particular diversity, and <strong>the</strong> continental shelf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Pacific supports rich marine life. The necessity <strong>to</strong> expand our knowledge <strong>of</strong> marine<br />

animals and plants and <strong>to</strong> meet economic needs connected with development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

region were <strong>the</strong> main reasons for foundation <strong>of</strong> a scientific institution for<br />
