Osip’ian, (Osipian) Iurii A., D. PM. S. Born in 1931 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> physicist.<br />

Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1988. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1972; and,<br />

an academician since 1981. He graduated from Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Steel in 1955.<br />

From 1955 <strong>to</strong> 1962 he was on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> metal physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Central Scientific Research Institute <strong>of</strong> Ferrous Metallurgy. From 1962-63 he was<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Crystallography Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. In 1970 he was<br />

appointed pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physico-Technical Institute. His main work has<br />

been in solid state physics. He has investigated <strong>the</strong> interaction <strong>of</strong> dislocations and<br />

electrons in solids and discovered new phenomena in solids, for example: <strong>the</strong> pho<strong>to</strong><br />

plastic effect, electron paramagnetic resonance in dislocations, and dislocation conductivity.<br />

His work forms <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> a new field--"dislocation solid state physics."<br />

Since 1973, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Solid State Physics Institute in Moscow that<br />

was created in 1962 and whose main branch is in Chernogolovka. It does research<br />

in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> crystallography, high pressure physics, metallurgy, semiconduc<strong>to</strong>rs,<br />

superconduc<strong>to</strong>rs, and magnetic fields. He was co-winner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1978 Lenin Prize<br />

for studies on "New Means <strong>of</strong> Syn<strong>the</strong>sis and Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Structure <strong>of</strong> Organic<br />

Phosphorus Compounds" (1954-75.) In 1984, he was given <strong>the</strong> P. N. Lebedev<br />

Gold Medal by <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> for his contributions <strong>to</strong> physics. (GSE<br />

30, p. 600.)<br />

Petrov, Rem V., D. Chem. S. Born in 1930. Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

Biological <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1988. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biochemistry, Biophysics, and<br />

Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically y Active Compounds Department since 1984. Also<br />

academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medical <strong>Sciences</strong>. In 1978, he was awarded <strong>the</strong> I. I.<br />

Mechnikov Prize in biology. In 1987, he received <strong>the</strong> I. I. Mechnikov Gold Medal<br />

in recognition <strong>of</strong> his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical and biological sciences. He heads<br />

<strong>the</strong> Immunology Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M. M. Shmiakin Bioorganic Chemistry Institute in<br />

Moscow, which has 18 labora<strong>to</strong>ries. He also heads up <strong>the</strong> Science-Educational<br />

Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute.<br />

Velikhov, Evgenii P., D. PM. S. Born in 1935 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />

physicist. Since 1974, he has been an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and<br />

Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and since 1984, he has acted as<br />

Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information Science, Computer Technology, and<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He graduated from Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1958 and began working in <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> A<strong>to</strong>mic Energy becoming<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> its departments in 1962. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> since 1968. From 1971 <strong>to</strong> 1988, he served as Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I.<br />

V. Kurcha<strong>to</strong>v A<strong>to</strong>mic Energy Institute in Moscow. In 1988, he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> this important institute that was created in 1943 <strong>to</strong> develop nuclear weapons. It is<br />

<strong>the</strong> largest institute in Russia that concentrates on nuclear research that includes all<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> a<strong>to</strong>mic energy, including plasma and solid state physics, fission and<br />

fusion reac<strong>to</strong>rs, and lasers. The institute was directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> State<br />

Committee for Utilization <strong>of</strong> A<strong>to</strong>mic Energy. Since 1977, he has served as Vice<br />

President for <strong>the</strong> Physical and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> Section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Since 1978, he has headed <strong>the</strong> Geophysical Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Temperatures<br />

Institute in Moscow, and has served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GKNT. Since 1984, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r for science <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Industrial Lasers Scientific Research Center in Troitsk subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

The center is comprised <strong>of</strong> scientific research divisions, a design bureau, and an<br />

experimental production facility that develops and introduces laser <strong>to</strong>ols and methods<br />

in<strong>to</strong> industry. His works are in low-temperature physics, plasma and magnetic<br />

hydrodynamics. Since 1984, he has also served as a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r for science <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Archive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in St. Petersburg. In 1986, he was <strong>the</strong><br />
