<strong>Academy</strong>. He is currently <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Highly Productive Computer Systems<br />

Dorodnitsin, Ana<strong>to</strong>lii A., D. Tech. S., born 1910 in Bashino, Tula District <strong>Russian</strong>,<br />

graduated in 1931 from Grozny Oil Institute, received his candidate degree in<br />

Physical and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Main Geophysical Observa<strong>to</strong>ry in St.<br />

Petersburg in 1939, and his doc<strong>to</strong>rate in Technical <strong>Sciences</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Zhukovskii<br />

Central Aero-hydrodynamic Institute in 1942, was made a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1949 and<br />

elected as an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy in 1953. He worked from 1936 <strong>to</strong> 1941 at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Main Geophysical Observa<strong>to</strong>ry, in 1941 at <strong>the</strong> Zhukovskii Central Aerohydrodynamic<br />

Institute, from 1944-1946, he was pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Moscow Aviation<br />

Institute, from 1945 <strong>to</strong> 1955, he was a senior researcher and Head <strong>of</strong> a department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute in Moscow, from 1948-1951, pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />

Moscow State <strong>University</strong>; from 1952 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present he has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aerodynamics Group, Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Group, Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics Group <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physical-Technical Institute, and from<br />

1955 <strong>to</strong> 1989, he served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> computing center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy in<br />

Moscow. From 1989 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present he has served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r Emeritus <strong>of</strong> that<br />

center. Since 1960 he has been edi<strong>to</strong>r in Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Computational<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics. His research interests have included: aerohydrodynamics,<br />

computational ma<strong>the</strong>matics, and ma<strong>the</strong>matical physics, geophysics,<br />

informatics, ma<strong>the</strong>matical modeling, and ecological problems.<br />

Efremov, Veniamin P., D. Tech. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>, Computer Technology and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1984; academician since 1993. He is currently serving on <strong>the</strong> Bureau Governing<br />

Body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Informatics, Computer Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong>. He is also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Energy Astrophysics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Emelianov, Stanislav V., D. Tech. S. Born in May 1929 in Voronezh. He has been a<br />

corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy since 1970, and an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Informatics, Computer Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department (formerly <strong>the</strong><br />

Information Science, Computer Technology, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

AN SSSR and <strong>the</strong> RAS since 1984. He has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academy since Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1988. <strong>Russian</strong> scientist in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> au<strong>to</strong>mated control. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Aviation Institute in 1952. He created a new line <strong>of</strong><br />

development in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> au<strong>to</strong>mated control, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> systems with variable<br />

structure. Such systems are used <strong>to</strong> control non-stationary units, as in buildings,<br />

movement control systems <strong>of</strong> aircraft, and in <strong>the</strong> au<strong>to</strong>mated landing systems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

supersonic passenger aircraft Tu 144. Systems with variable structure are also used<br />

in <strong>the</strong> metallurgical, Chemical and food industries. He received <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in<br />

1972. Since 1976 he has been a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Systems Research SRI in<br />

Moscow. Since 1977, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Scientific Research<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Control Problems in Moscow that was established in 1977. He is<br />

currently <strong>the</strong> direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Systems Analysis Institute located in Moscow as well as<br />

being Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Informatics, Computer<br />

Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation. (GSE 9, p.121.)<br />

Evtikhiev, Nikolai N., D. Tech S. Born in 1932. Evtikhiev has been a corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Machine Building, Mechanical and Control Processes Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> academy since 1979, and academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information Science, Computer<br />

Technology, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and <strong>the</strong> RAS since 1987.<br />
