Groenlandia se enfrenta a ciertos problemas estructurales fundamentales debido a una población envejecida y a la caída de su PNB en los últimos años, aspectos coyunturales que han motivado al Gobierno a impulsar la actividad empresarial y el desarrollo industrial, así como a incrementar la calidad y el nivel de la educación para combatir el desempleo y la emigración. Diversos expertos han abogado por el establecimiento del marco y las condiciones que propicien nuevo crecimiento económico. El Gobierno ha emprendido varias iniciativas para generar ingresos derivados del aumento de impuestos sobre los recursos, principalmente la pesca. Junto con la financiación principal aportada por Dinamarca, los ingresos generados por las actividades pesqueras constituyen el pilar vertebrador de la economía de Groenlandia. Sin embargo, voces críticas han expresado que la imposición sobre la pesca de impuestos aleatorios, creados para cumplir con el presupuesto fiscal, puede acarrear efectos negativos sobre dicho sector. Falta de transparencia Transparency International Greenland (TIG) se creó en 2011, y en 2015 fue aceptada como miembro de pleno derecho de Transparency International. La organización forma parte de la Coalición de ONG de Groenlandia, formada en 2013, a fin de garantizar la consulta a la sociedad civil sobre los principales proyectos de desarrollo. TIG supervisa minuciosamente la actuación del Gobierno, las instituciones democráticas y las empresas públicas y privadas de la isla. El Gobierno groenlandés presentó un sistema para facilitar la denuncia interna de anoMalias, con la intención de evitar el nepotismo y asegurar la transparencia en la administración central. El mecanismo permite al personal informar de manera anónima sobre presuntas irregularidades y posibles incumplimientos de la legislación vigente. Tras su implantación, tanto TIG como el gran partido de la oposición, IA, solicitaron enmiendas legislativas para permitir que se aplique también a empresas públicas y privadas.
