Chapter 4: Use StandardsSECTION 4.2: USE-SPECIFIC STANDARDSSubsection 4.2.3: Institutional Uses(B)applicable local, State, and Federal building codes andstructural standards.Every two years after construction of a tower, theowner shall submit to the Planning Director astatement on the tower’s structural soundness that issigned and sealed by an engineer. Every sixth year,the statement shall be signed and sealed by anindependent, registered, and licensed engineer.(ii)(iii)(iv)(v)HeightThe height of a telecommunications tower, including anybuilding or structure atop which the tower is located, shall notexceed 450 feet.Aesthetics(A)(B)(C)Towers shall either maintain a galvanized steel finishor be painted.Towers shall be camouflaged with the surroundingarea, through paint, incorporation into architecturaldesign/structure, or other means, to the maximumextent practicable.The exterior appearance of ground-based accessorystructures located within a residential zoning districtshall be designed to look like a residential structuretypical of the district (e.g., with a pitched roof andframe or brick siding).LightingIf lighting is required by the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), it shall comply with FAA standards. Unless required bythe FAA, strobe lights shall not be used for nighttime lightingand lighting shall be oriented so as not to project directly ontoany surrounding residentially-zoned property. Documentationfrom the FAA that the lighting is the minimum lighting itrequires shall be submitted to the Planning Director beforeissuance of any building permit for the tower.Setbacks(A)(B)(C)Towers and antennas shall be required to maintain aone foot setback from front, side, and rear propertylines for every one foot of tower height. Guy wires,when applicable, shall conform to district setbackprovisions.There shall be no setback requirements between thetower and other structures located on the subjectproperty.Buildings associated with a telecommunications facilityshall meet the minimum setback requirements for thezoning district where located.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE4.21
