Manufacturing and Production(1) CharacteristicsThe Manufacturing and Production Use Category includes use types involvedin the manufacturing, processing, fabrication, packaging, or assembly of goods.Products may be finished or semi-finished and are generally made for thewholesale market, for transfer to other plants, or to order for firms orconsumers. The use category also includes custom industries (establishmentsprimarily engaged in the on-site production of goods by use of hand tools andsmall-scale equipment). Goods are generally not displayed or sold on site, butif so, such sales are a subordinate part of total sales. Relatively few customerscome to the manufacturing site. Accessory uses may include retail orwholesale sales, offices, cafeterias, parking, employee recreational facilities,warehouses, storage yards, repair facilities, truck fleets, fueling facilities,security and caretaker’s quarters.(a)(b)(2) Examples(a)(b)Heavy ManufacturingHeavy Manufacturing is the manufacture or compounding process ofraw materials. These activities may involve outdoor operations aspart of their manufacturing process.Light ManufacturingLight Manufacturing is the mechanical transformation of predominantlypreviously prepared materials into new products, including assembly ofcomponent parts and the creation of products for sale to wholesale orretail markets or directly to consumers. Such uses are whollyconfined within an enclosed building, do not include processing ofhazardous gases and chemicals, and do not emit noxious noise, smoke,vapors, fumes, dust, glare, odor, or vibration.Heavy ManufacturingHeavy Manufacturing uses include, but are not limited to: manufactureor assembly of machinery, equipment, instruments, vehicles,appliances, communications equipment, computer or electronicequipment, precision items and other electrical items; asphalt/concreteplants; the processing of food and related products; lumber mills, pulpand paper mills, and the manufacture of other wood products; andelectric power generation plants.Light ManufacturingExample use types of light manufacturing include: production or repairof small machines or electronic parts and equipment; sewing orCURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.31
