Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.5: DEFINITIONSAirport Traffic Pattern ZoneAIRPORT TRAFFIC PATTERN ZONEAn area centered on the runway protection zone that is used to enhance the compatibility ofuses in close proximity to an airport. The traffic pattern protection zone dimensions are basedon total runway length and airport capacity.ALTERATIONAny change or expansion in the size, configuration, or location of a structure; or any change orexpansion in the use of a structure or lot, from a previously approved or legally existing size,configuration, location, or use.ALTERNATIVE LANDSCAPING PLANA plan or other proposal to deviate from the basic landscaping or tree protection standards inSection 5.2, Landscaping Standards, or Section 7.2, Tree Protection, as described in Section5.2.9 of this Ordinance.ALTERNATIVE PARKING PLANA plan or other proposal to utilize one or more of the alternative parking provisions in Section5.1.6, Alternative Parking Plans, as a means of providing more off-street parking spaces thantypically allowed or fewer spaces than required.AIRPORTAny area of land or water designed and set aside for the landing and take-off of aircraft,including all necessary facilities for the housing and maintenance of aircraft.AMENITIESManmade or natural features which enhance or make more attractive a particular site fordevelopment.AMPHITHEATERSee “Arena”.ANIMAL GROOMINGAny place or establishment, public or private, where animals are bathed, clipped, or combedfor the purpose of enhancing their aesthetic value and/or health and for which a fee is charged.ANIMAL HUSBANDRYThe active and on-going propagation, rearing, exercising, feeding, milking, housing, controlling,handling, or general care of living animals, including the raising and production of cattle (beefand dairy), pigs, mules, ducks, emus, horses, goats, llama, poultry, sheep, and similar animalhusbandry uses.ANIMAL SHELTERA facility used to house and care for stray, homeless, abandoned, or neglected animals and thatis owned, operated, or maintained by a public body, an established humane society, or otherprivate or nonprofit organization.ANTENNAA device used to transmit and/or receive radio or electromagnetic waves between land basedor orbiting uses.APPEALAn appeal of an administrative decision-maker’s interpretation or decision reviewed andapproved, approved with conditions, or denied by the Board of Adjustment in accordance withSection 2.4.17, Appeal.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.38
