Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.5: DEFINITIONSLUMENLUMENA unit of luminous flux. One foot-candle is one lumen per square foot. Lumen output valuesshall be the initial lumen output ratings of a lamp.MACHINE SHOPAn establishment where metal is cut and shaped by machine tools.MAINLANDThe portion of Currituck County connected to the mainland, but excluding Knotts Island andGibbs Woods.MAJOR RECREATIONAL EQUIPMENTVehicles and equipment intended primarily for recreational purposes, including, but not limitedto: boats, campers, recreational vehicles, motor homes, and travel trailers.MANSARD ROOFA sloped roof or roof-like facade architecturally comparable to a building wall.MANUFACTURED HOMEA structure, transportable in one or more sections, which is built on a permanent chassis anddesigned to be used with or without a permanent foundation when connected to the requiredutilities. The term “manufactured home” does not include a “recreational vehicle”.MANUFACTURED HOME/PREFABRICATED BUILDINGSALESA retail establishment engaged in the sale of manufactured homes or prefabricated buildingsthat are built or assembled on- or off-site.MANUFACTURED HOME PARK OR SUBDIVISIONFor the purposes of Flood Damage Prevention, means a parcel (or contiguous parcels) or landdivided into two or more manufactured home lots for rent or sale.MANUFACTURED HOME PARK OR MANUFACTURED HOME SUBDIVISION,EXISTINGFor the purposes of Section 7.4, Flood Damage Prevention, a manufactured home park orsubdivision for which the construction of facilities for servicing the lots on which themanufactured homes are to be affixed (including, at a minimum, the installation of utilities, theconstruction of streets, and either final site grading or the pouring of concrete pads) wascompleted before the initial effective date of the floodplain management regulations adoptedby the community.MANUFACTURING, HEAVYManufacturing uses include, but are not limited to: manufacture or assembly of machinery,equipment, instruments, vehicles, appliances, communications equipment, computer orelectronic equipment, precision items and other electrical items; the processing of food andrelated products; lumber mills, pulp and paper mills, and the manufacture of other woodproducts; and electric power generation plants. Specifically prohibited are rendering,petroleum refining, asphalt/concrete plants, and manufacture of chemicals, fertilizers, paint, andturpentine.MANUFACTURING, LIGHTThe mechanical transformation of predominantly previously prepared materials into newproducts, including assembly of component parts and the creation of products for sale to thewholesale or retail markets or directly to consumers. Such uses are wholly confined within anenclosed building, do not include processing of hazardous gases and chemicals, and do not emitnoxious noise, smoke, vapors, fumes, dust, glare, odor, or vibration.
