Chapter 6: Subdivision and Infrastructure StandardsSECTION 6.2: REQUIRED INFRASTRUCTURESubsection 6.2.4: Fire Protection Standardshydrants shall be located in a manner that ensures every lot is within 500linear feet of a hydrant. The Fire Marshal may authorize or require a deviationfrom this standard if, in the opinion of the Fire Marshal, another arrangementmore satisfactorily complies with the intent or standards in this <strong>Ordinance</strong>.(3) Fire Hydrant LocationUnless an alternative placement is specified by the State Building Code or thePlanning Director, in consultation with the Fire Marshal, fire hydrants shall beplaced six feet behind the curb or within ten feet of the pavement edge of astreet without curbing.(4) Required Hose ConnectionsUnless otherwise specified, all fire hydrants shall have the following hoseconnections:(a)(b)Two two-and-one-half-inch hose connections at least 21½ inchesabove ground level; andOne four-and-one-half-inch connection.All hose connections shall be sized in accordance with national standards.(5) Water Service Line SizeWater lines serving fire hydrants shall be at least six inches in diameter andshall not be dead-end lines, unless no other practicable alternative exists.B. Water Supply for Fire Protection when not Served by Public Water SupplySystemResidential development containing 20 or more dwelling units and every nonresidentialsubdivision containing 10 or more lots and not served by a public water system shallprovide a supply of water for fire-fighting purposes in accordance with the followingstandards:(1) Allowable SourcesThe developer may provide the required water supply from fire ponds, canals,wells, cisterns, above ground storage tanks, water lines (where a communitywater supply system is installed), or any combination of these features.(2) Location(a)(b)(c)(3) Capacity(a)Water supply facilities shall be within 2,500 linear feet of everyanticipated building in a development.Water supply facilities may be located on or off-site, however thedeveloper shall demonstrate a sufficient legal interest in off-sitefacilities to ensure they will remain available to serve the development.Water supply sources shall be so located so that fire-fighting vehicleshave ready access to such sources at all times.A sufficient volume of water shall be available at all times to supply thewater flow needed to suppress a fire for a period of two hours at arate of 1,000 gallons-per-minute.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE6.21
