Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.3: RULES OF MEASUREMENTSubsection 10.3.6: HeightFigure 10.3.6, Height Measurement(2) Building StoryThe space between the surface of any floor and the surface of the next floorabove it; or if there is no floor above it, the space between the floor surfaceand the top of the ceiling joists or roof rafters above it. Typically, story heightin a residential structure is nine feet per story, and story height in a nonresidentialstructure is twelve feet per story.(3) Established GradeEstablished grade is the finished grade following grading, excavation, or otherland-disturbing activity.(4) GradeGrade means the level of the ground elevation prior to the commencement ofdevelopment or land-disturbing activity.B. Height Requirements(1) Multi-story buildings within a mixed-use district or intended for mixed usesand all parking structures shall maintain a first floor ceiling height of at least 15feet to accommodate commercial first-floor uses.(2) No building shall contain more than three habitable stories.(3) Buildings within the APO may be subject to height requirements not applied toareas outside the APO.C. Exceptions(1) GeneralHeight limits shall not apply to bulk storage silos, grain elevators, barns,chimneys, elevator shafts, church spires, belfries, cupolas, domes, flag poles,monuments, water towers, rooftop dish antennas, solar equipment, skylights,CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.14
