Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.5: DEFINITIONSGrocery StoreGROCERY STOREAn establishment engaged in retail and/or wholesale sale of food, foodstuffs, sundries, or othercommon household items to members of the public.GROUND COVERAny natural vegetative growth or other material that renders the soil surface stable againstaccelerated erosion.HALFWAY HOUSEA licensed home for not more than nine juveniles or adult persons on release from morerestrictive custodial confinement or initially placed in lieu of such more restrictive custodialconfinement, wherein supervision, rehabilitation, and counseling is provided to assist residentsback into society, enabling them to live independently.HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITYFor purposes of Flood Damage Prevention, a facility for the collection, storage, processing,treatment, recycling, recovery, or disposal of hazardouse waste, as defined in NCGS 130A,Article 9.HEAVY EQUIPMENT SALES, RENTAL, AND SERVICEAn establishment engaged in the display, sale, leasing, servicing, or rental of heavy equipment of12,000 or more pounds gross vehicular weight (GVW). The use may also consist of a vehicleor series of vehicle that service or repair heavy equipment on-site.HELICOPTER LANDING FACILITYAn area, either on ground level or elevated on a structure, licensed or approved for thelanding and takeoff of helicopters and which may include auxiliary facilities such as parking,waiting room, fueling, and maintenance equipment.HIGHEST ADJACENT GRADEFor the purposes of Section 7.4, Flood Damage Prevention, the highest natural elevation of theground surface, prior to construction, immediately next to the proposed walls of thestructure.HISTORIC STRUCTUREAny structure that is:a. Listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places (a listingmaintained by the US Department of Interior) or preliminarily determined bythe Secretary of Interior as meeting the requirements for individual listing onthe National Register;b. Certified or preliminarily determined by the Secretary of Interior ascontributing to the historical significance of a registered historic district or adistrict preliminarily determined by the Secretary to qualify as a registeredhistoric district;c. Individually listed on a local inventory of historic landmarks in communitieswith a “Certified Local <strong>Government</strong> (CLG) Program”; ord. Certified as contributing to the historical significance of a historic districtdesignated by a community with a “Certified Local <strong>Government</strong> (CLG)Program”.HOME OCCUPATIONA business, profession, occupation, or trade which is conducted within a residential dwellingunit for the economic gain or support of a resident of the dwelling, and is incidental andCURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.59
