Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.5: DEFINITIONSAgricultural processingconsumers, such as “farm share” arrangements under which periodic delivery of farm productsis made for a subscription fee.AGRICULTURAL PROCESSINGProcessing operations for agricultural products raised on the premises or locally only, includingmeat preparation; feed mills; dairy processing; timber processing; and fruit and vegetablepacking, sorting and grading, as an accessory use to an agriculture, horticulture, or animalhusbandry use.AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH FACILITYA facility for the investigation, testing, and demonstration of agricultural products andprocesses, including biotechnical agriculture, veterinary, soil, plant, and animal sciences.AGRICULTURE/HORTICULTUREUses characterized by general active and on-going agricultural activities, including agronomy,aquaculture, biotechnical agriculture (including education parks for biotechnical agriculture or ademonstration farm), forestry, fisheries, apiculture, and similar uses. Agriculture does notinclude preparatory functions such as grading or creation of planting beds through stockpilingof dirt or other means when such preparations do not result in an active and on-goingagricultural activity within 30 days.AGRI-EDUCATIONA facility for the investigation, testing, or demonstration of, or for training or educatingpersons in, products and processes related to agriculture, horticulture, or animal husbandry,including biotechnical agriculture, veterinary, soil, plant, and animal sciences.AGRI-ENTERTAINMENTEvents and activities such as corn mazes, hay rides and petting zoos that allow for recreation,entertainment and tourism in conjunction with agriculture support (directly-related).AIRCRAFT PARTS, SALES, AND MAINTENANCEThe use of land for the display and sale of, or general repair, rebuilding, or reconditioning ofany contrivance now known or hereafter invented for use in or designed for navigation of orflight in air.AIRPORT APPROACH ZONEAn area that is longitudinally centered on the runway centerline and extends outward andupward from each end of the primary surface. An approach zone is applied to each end of eachrunway based on the type of approach available or planned for that runway end.AIRPORT COMPATIBLE USE ZONEDefined areas on and off airport property that are zoned to ensure airport compatible landuses. In “Land Use Compatibility and Airports,” the Federal Aviation Administrationrecommends this approach to identify and implement land use controls for low-activityairports without significant aircraft noise exposure contours. The compatible use zonesinclude the airport runway protection zone, the airport approach zone, and the airport trafficpattern zone.AIRPORT RUNWAY PROTECTION ZONEAn area centered along the extended runway centerline that is used to enhance the safety ofaircraft operations.
