Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.5: DEFINITIONSSTREET TREESTREET TREEA canopy tree planted or existing within or along either side of a street right-of-way.STREET, ALLEYAny strip of land publicly or privately owned, less than 16 feet in width between lot lines, setaside for vehicular right-of-way to adjoining lots.STREET, ARTERIAL ACCESSA street that is parallel to and adjacent to a major arterial street and that is designed toprovide access to abutting properties as means of protecting the arterial street’s trafficcarrying capacity.STREET, COLLECTORA street whose principle function is to carry traffic between local streets and arterial streetsbut that may also provide direct access to abutting properties. It generally serves or isdesigned to serve, directly or indirectly, more than 100 dwelling units and 800 trips per day.STREET, CUL-DE-SACA local street that terminates in a vehicular turnaround.STREET, LOCALA street whose primary function is to provide access to abutting properties. It generallyserves or is designed to serve less than 100 dwelling units and less than 800 trips per day.STREET, LOOPA street that has its beginning and points on the same road.STREET, MAJOR ARTERIALA street whose principal function is to carry large volumes of traffic at higher speeds from onepart of the county to another. Specifically, the following streets shall be considered arterials:US 158, NC 168, NC 34, NC 136, NC 615 and NC 12 (Ocean Trail).STREET, PRIVATEA street other than a public street.STREET, PRIVATE ACCESSA street subject to the requirements of Section 6.2.1.B.1, Private Access Streets, that serves afamily subdivision or a maximum of two lots.STREET, PUBLICA public right-of-way for vehicular travel which has been designed, constructed and dedicatedto and accepted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) for public useor which has been otherwise obtained by DOT for such use or which is proposed to beconstructed and then dedicated to and accepted by DOT as a public right-of-way for vehiculartraffic for public use pursuant to this ordinance.STRUCTUREAnything constructed, installed, or portable, the use of which requires a location on a parcel ofland. This includes a fixed or movable building which can be used for residential, business,commercial, agricultural, or office purposes, either temporarily or permanently. "Structure"also includes, but is not limited to, swimming pools, tennis courts, signs, cisterns, sewagetreatment plants, sheds, docks, mooring areas, and similar accessory construction.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.83
