Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.4: USE CLASSIFICATIONS, USE CATEGORIES, AND USE TYPESSubsection 10.4.4: Institutional Use ClassificationAccessory uses may include offices, meeting, food preparation, parking, health,and therapy areas; and athletic facilities.(2) ExamplesExample use types include community centers, cultural facilities, libraries,museums, senior centers, and youth club facilities.(3) ExceptionsParks are classified as Parks and Open Space.B. Day Care(1) CharacteristicsThe Day Care Use Category is characterized by use types that provide care,protection, and supervision for children or adults on a regular basis away fromtheir primary residence, and typically for less than 24 hours per day. Care canbe provided during daytime or nighttime hours. Accessory uses includeoffices, food preparation, recreation areas, and parking.(2) ExamplesExample use types include adult day care centers and child care centers.(3) ExceptionsThe Day Care Use Category does not include incidental child care within aprimary residence, drop-in or short-term day care provided in connectionwith employment or shopping center, recreational facility, religious institution,hotel, or other principal use, where children are temporarily cared for whileparents or guardians are employed part-time or temporarily occupied on thepremises or in the immediate vicinity.C. Educational Facilities(1) CharacteristicsThe Educational Facilities Use Category includes use types such as public andprivate schools at the elementary, middle, or high school level that providestate-mandated basic education or a comparable equivalent. This use categoryalso includes colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher learningsuch as vocational or trade schools that offer courses of general or specializedstudy leading to a degree or certification. Accessory uses at schools includeoffices, play areas, cafeterias, recreational and sport facilities, auditoriums, andbefore- or after-school day care. Accessory uses at colleges or universitiesinclude offices, dormitories, food service, laboratories, health and sportsfacilities, theaters, meeting areas, athletic fields, parking, maintenance facilities,and supporting commercial.(2) ExamplesExample use types include public and private kindergarten schools, elementaryschools, middle or junior high schools, and senior high schools that providestate-mandated basic education, as well as colleges or universities, andvocational or trade schools.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.21
