Chapter 4: Use StandardsSECTION 4.3: ACCESSORY USE STANDARDSSubsection 4.3.3: Specific Standards for Certain Accessory UsesW. StableStables shall comply with the standards for equestrian facilities in Section 4.2.1.B.3 ofthis <strong>Ordinance</strong>.X. Underground Storage Tanks(1) Except for water and L.P. gas tanks, use or placement of a metallicunderground storage tank is prohibited.(2) State- or Federal-approved fiberglass tanks may be installed underground.(3) Upon the installation of any underground tank, a building permit shall beacquired, the Fire Marshal shall be notified, and a survey prepared by a NorthCarolina registered land surveyor showing the exact location of the tank.(4) Prior to final inspection, the survey shall be recorded in the office of the<strong>Currituck</strong> <strong>County</strong> Register of Deeds.Y. Wind Energy Facility, SmallA small wind energy facility shall comply with the following standards:(1) AmountTowers and turbines associated with a small wind energy facility shall belimited to a maximum of one per principal use.(2) Location and Setback(a)(b)Small wind energy facilities shall not be located between a principalbuilding and any streets fronting the lot.A small wind energy facility shall be set back a distance equal to itstotal extended height (e.g., if on a roof, roof height plus the height ofany tower extending from the roof) plus ten feet from all lot lines andoverhead utilities. Guy wires and other support devices shall be setback at least ten feet from all lot lines.(3) HeightThe maximum height of a small wind energy system (including the tower andextended blades) shall be 120 feet.(4) SoundSound produced by the wind turbine under normal operating conditions, asmeasured at a lot line, shall not exceed 55 dBA. The 55 dBA sound level,however, may be exceeded during short-term events that occur beyond theproperty owner’s control, such as utility outages and/or severe wind storms.(5) AppearanceThe wind turbine and tower shall be painted or finished in the color originallyapplied by the manufacturer, or a matte neutral color (e.g., gray, white, orgalvanized steel).(6) Blade ClearanceThe blade tip or vane of any small wind energy facility shall have a minimumground clearance of 15 feet above grade, as measured at the lowest point ofthe arc of the blades.
