Chapter 5: <strong>Development</strong> StandardsSECTION 5.12: SIGNAGESubsection 5.12.3: Signs Exempt from Signage RegulationsI. Signs or portions of signs designed to move by any means or give the appearance ofmovement in any manner except for suspended signs intended for pedestrians andflags as described in this <strong>Ordinance</strong>;J. Roof signs;K. Vehicle signs on vehicles or trailers that are not currently licensed and registered bythe Department of Motor Vehicles;L. Internally-illuminated signs (other than window signs) on lots located on the OuterBanks; andM. Portable signs and mobile marquee signs on lots in the Outer Banks.5.12.3. Signs Exempt from Signage RegulationsThe following signs are exempt from the signage standards in this section:A. Signs and legal notices erected by or on behalf of, or pursuant to, the authorization ofa governmental body, including but not limited to, traffic, directional, or regulatorysigns;B. Informational signs that identify public property, convey public information, or displayother identification not having a commercial message;C. Signs designed to direct and guide vehicular and pedestrian traffic on private property,but bearing no advertising matter;D. Religious or civic symbols for noncommercial purposes, including lights anddecorations temporarily displayed on holidays;E. Official signs of a non-commercial nature erected by public utilities;F. Residential flags or flags, pennants, and insignia of any governmental or non-profitorganization when not displayed in connection with a commercial promotion or as anadvertising device;G. Trademarks or product names which are displayed as part of vending machines,dispensing machines, automatic teller machines, and gasoline pumps;H. Vendor signs located at convenience stores, provided such signs are not attached topublic utility poles or traffic signs; andI. Integral decorative or architectural features of buildings, except letters, trademarks,moving parts, or moving lights.5.12.4. Signs Exempted from Sign Permit RequirementsThe signs in Table 5.12.4, Signs Exempted from Sign Permits, are exempt from therequirements to obtain sign permit approval, but are subject to the standards in Section 5.12.8,Maintenance Standards, and the standards in this sub-section.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE5.80
