Chapter 6: Subdivision and Infrastructure StandardsSECTION 6.2: REQUIRED INFRASTRUCTURESubsection 6.2.3: Utility StandardsA. Block Length(1) No block lengths shall be less than 200 linear feet long.(2) Block length shall be limited to 1,000 linear feet, unless the subdividerdemonstrates the standards cannot be met because:(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCEEnvironmental or topographic constraints exist, requiring longerblocks;A site has an irregular shape;A longer block will reduce the number of railroad grade or majorstream crossings;A longer block is necessary to comply with driveway or intersectionspacing requirements; orA longer block will result in less traffic through residential subdivisionsfrom adjoining businesses or areas.B. Block WidthTo the maximum extent practicable, the width of any block shall be sufficient topermit at least two tiers of lots of appropriate depth for the zoning district exclusiveof any public alleys, watercourses, or other right-of-way located outside platted lots.6.2.3. Utility StandardsAll utilities shall be installed in accordance with the following standards:A. General Standards(1) All utilities (including, but not limited to: electric power, telephone, gasdistribution, cable television, potable water, sewer, etc.) located outside anexisting street right-of-way and intended to serve new development shall beunderground.(2) The requirement for underground electricity, telephone, or cable televisionutilities shall not be applied to lateral service lines intended to serve anindividual single-family dwelling that must extend over 200 feet from anoverhead source.(3) Unless attached to a bridge, no utilities may be installed over the waters of the<strong>Currituck</strong> Sound or over areas of environmental concern, and no utility polesshall be erected within the waters of <strong>Currituck</strong> Sound or areas ofenvironmental concern.(4) All utility providers installing service lines for their respective utilities in thepublic right-of-way are required to maximize the potential for co-location intrenches and to standardize the design of utilities.(5) All utility facilities shall be constructed in such a manner as to minimizeinterference with pedestrian or vehicular traffic and to facilitate maintenancewithout undue damage to improvements or facilities located within thedevelopment.B. Utility Easements(1) Each subdivision shall provide utility easements in accordance with thefollowing standards:6.15
