Chapter 4: Use StandardsSECTION 4.2: USE-SPECIFIC STANDARDSSubsection 4.2.5: Industrial Uses(d)(e)Outdoor storage is not required to be screened from views onadjacent lots located within industrial districts; andOutdoor storage areas shall be configured to allow vehicularcirculation through and around the storage area.(2) Self-Service StorageSelf-service storage uses shall comply with the following standards:(a)Site Layout(i)(ii)The minimum lot area shall be three acres.If separate buildings are constructed, there shall be a minimumseparation of ten feet between buildings.(b)(c)Operation(i)(ii)(iii)(iv)(v)The only commercial uses permitted on-site shall be the rentalof storage bays and the pickup and deposit of goods orproperty in dead storage. Storage bays shall not be used tomanufacture, fabricate, or process goods, to service or repairvehicles, small engines or electrical equipment, or conductsimilar repair activities, to conduct garage sales or retail salesof any kind, or to conduct any other commercial or industrialactivity on the site.Individual storage bays or private postal boxes within a selfservicestorage facility use shall not be considered premisesfor the purpose of assigning a legal address.No more than one security or caretaker quarters may bedeveloped on the site, and shall be integrated into thebuilding’s design.Except as otherwise authorized in this subsection, all propertystored on the site shall be enclosed entirely within enclosedbuildings.Hours of public access to a self-storage use abutting aresidential zoning district or existing residential use shall berestricted to the hours between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M.Parking and Circulation(i)(ii)(iii)Interior parking shall be provided in the form of aislewaysadjacent to the storage bays. Aisleways shall be used both forcirculation and temporary customer parking while usingstorage bays. The minimum width of aisleways shall be 21 feetif only one-way traffic is permitted, and 30 feet if two-waytraffic is permitted.The one- or two-way traffic flow patterns in aisleways shall beclearly marked. Marking shall consist, at a minimum, ofstandard directional signage and painted lane markings witharrows.Appropriate access and circulation by vehicles and emergencyequipment shall be ensured through the design of internalturning radii of aisleways.CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE4.41
