Chapter 6: Subdivision and Infrastructure StandardsSECTION 6.2: REQUIRED INFRASTRUCTURESubsection 6.2.3: Utility Standards(2) Water Supply System Required(a)(b)(c)(d)CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCEEvery principal use and every buildable lot in a subdivision shall beserved by a means of water supply that is adequate to accommodatethe reasonable needs of such use or lot and that complies with allapplicable health regulations.All buildable lots within a planned unit development or planneddevelopment shall be connected and serviced by a central watersystem.All multi-family development and townhouse units shall be connectedto and serviced by a central water system.The developer shall submit whatever information the PlanningDirector determines necessary to ensure the developer or asuccessor in interest will be able to comply with this section.(3) Connection to Public Water Supply System(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)(f)Whenever it is legally possible and practicable in terms of topographyto connect development to the county’s water supply system, thedeveloper or subdivider shall install the pipes and accessoriesnecessary to provide water service to all lots or units in adevelopment.Connection to the county’s water supply system shall be consideredimpractical if the distance between the closest existing county watermain and the proposed development exceeds a distance equivalent to100 feet for each of the first ten units plus 20 feet for each additionalunit.Example: a proposed subdivision with 30 single-family residentiallots would have to be located over 1,400 feet from an existingwater main to be considered impractical for connection (10 units x100) + (20 units x 20).The total number of units in a development shall be determined bycalculating the maximum number of units allowable for each proposedlot.In determining the number of units proposed in a phaseddevelopment, the number of units for water services relates to thetotal number of proposed units for the entire tract rather than a singlephase of the proposed development.Each individual dwelling unit shall be counted as one residential unitfor the purposes of determining the maximum distance requirementsfor multi-family developments.The maximum connection distance for nonresidential developmentshall be determined by converting projected water demand from thedevelopment into an equivalent number of residential units andapplying the formula in (b) above. For the purposes of this section, anindividual residential dwelling unit uses 250 gallons of water per day.A nonresidential use anticipated to use 1,000 gallons per day shall beequivalent to four residential dwelling units.Example: a proposed nonresidential development is anticipated touse 7,500 gallons of water per day. This is equivalent to 30 homes6.17
