Chapter 10: Definitions and MeasurementSECTION 10.5: DEFINITIONSSEASONAL HIGH WATER TABLESEASONAL HIGH WATER TABLEThe upper limit at which soil is saturated with water for periods long enough for anaerobicconditions to affect soil chemical properties and color or the highest level that groundwater, atatmospheric pressure, reaches in the soil in most years, but not necessarily the level to whichit rises in response to severe storm events.SEASONAL SALESThe temporary sale of goods or products associated with the season or a cultural event, suchas the sale of Christmas trees, pumpkins, or seasonal produce. Such sales typically take placein locations not devoted to such sales for the remainder of the year.SECURITY TRAINING FACILITYA facility located on at least 3,500 contiguous acres which provides the following services;explosives training, driver training (including vehicle maintenance facility to support drivertraining activities), training operations utilizing fixed and rotary wing aircraft (includingparachute operations and training, airstrip and supporting aviation structures, and parachutelanding zones), towers that are 100’ tall or less that are used in connection with securitytraining, dining facilities, commercial retail and lodging areas, and office, clerical, research andservices related to security training operations and services.SELF-SERVICE STORAGEA building divided into sections for use for storage of items, either temporary or long-term,and not to be used for any other purpose (such as small offices, garages, etc.). Also called“mini-warehouse.”SENIOR CENTERA facility typically for use by citizens of 62 years of age, or older, dedicated to the provision ofservices, activities, or facilitation of interaction between older citizens and the community atlarge. Such centers may be publicly or privately-owned, but are not operated for a profit.SHEAR WALLWalls used for structural support but not structurally joined or enclosed at the end (except bybreakaway walls). Shear walls are parallel or nearly parallel to the flow of the water.SHOPPING CENTEROne or more commercial buildings with 5,000 or more square feet of area that is divided intofour or more individual tenant spaces that are planned, constructed, and managed as a singleentity with common parking, access, loading, stormwater, landscaping, and open space facilities.SHRUBA woody plant, smaller than a tree, consisting of several small stems emerging from theground, or small branches near the ground. Shrubs may be deciduous or evergreen.SIGHT TRIANGLEA triangular shaped portion of land established at street and driveway intersections in whichnothing is erected or placed in such a manner as to limit or obstruct the line of sight ofmotorists entering or leaving an intersection or business. The site triangle is 10 feet x 70 feetwhere public road rights-of-way intersect and, 20 feet x 20 feet where driveways intersectwith road rights-of-way.SIGNAny device that (i) is sufficiently visible to persons not located on the lot where such device islocated to accomplish either of the objectives set forth in subdivision two of this definition,CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE10.78
