rapidamente escalantes de una fuente incierta de
energia - el petroleo. No obstante, la hidro-
electricidad bien establecida y actualmente eficiente,
representa un metodo muy razonable para que
podamos reducir nuestra dependencia de1 petroleo.
Esta es la tesis de la presentation de1 Ellis L.
Armstrong. Solo 17% de la hidroelectricidad mundial
utihzable ha sido desarroilado. En eonsecuencia. ei
concluye: “Debemos seguir avanzando.”
La mayotia de 10s probiemas de hoy dia, aun cuando

Cuando yo naci, despues de 6 a 8 mil aiios de
“civilizaeion” que se puede reconocer coma bl, hab,ia
cerca de un billon y medio de poblacion sobre nuestro
pianek. Recientemente hemos pasado ia marca de
10s 41/z billones y coma al ario 2020 se predice que el
numero ha de ser ei doble, o sea, 9 billones aproximadamenie.
Del total, 10% estaran en lo que
llamamos el mundo industrial libre; 25% es+aran en
1 los planeados paises centrales de U.S.S.R. y China y
sus satelites; y 65% estaran en 10s pai’ses en desarrollo.
Asi que, coma se puede ver, confronbmos problemas
diferentes a 10s de la generation pasada. Para
que la humanidad pueda sobrevivir, debemos todos
estar imbtidos y profundarnente envueltos en la
satisfaction de las necesidades de la poblacion de
todo el mundo, y en el mejoramiento de las condiciones
humanas en 10s pakes menos desarrollados.

We are all neighbors contending with rapidly
rising costs of an uncertain source of energy -
petroleum. However, hydropower, well esta-
blished and now efficient, represents a very
reasonable method for us to reduce our depen-
dence on oil. That is the thesis of Ellis L.
Armstrong’s presentation. Only 17% of the
world’s usable hydropower has been developed.
Consequentiy; he concludes: “We must get going
now.”
Most of today’s problems, while they all have
local focus, are becoming increasingly important
from a worldwide standpoint. Especially since my
cousin Neal Armstrong landed on the moon, our
awareness of this one world of ours has
sharpened. Whether we like it or not, we are all
on this little old spaceship together, and together
we must resolve our problems. We are all literally
neighbors; most any place on earth is less than a
day away from any other place. And we have

When I was born, after 6 or 8 thousand years
of recognizable “civilization”, there were about
1X billion people on our planet. We just recently
passed ?he 4?.. billion mark and by the year 2920
the number will likely double to 9 billion or so. Of

countries. So you see, we are facing different
problems than those of a generation ago. For
mankind’s survival, we all must be concerned and
deeply involved in meeting needs of people all
over the world, and in improving human conditions
in the !eSS deve!oped countries.

own muscles to provide energy to adapt his
environment to meet his needs, life was
precarious, fearful, disease ridden, and short. To
