quiera operaci6n automz%ica. Se debe proveer<br />

normalmente una rejilla de protecci6n contra la<br />

baaura para evitar que la basura penetre en el canal.<br />

for large structures or vertical-lift gates for<br />

smaller structures. Manual operation of the gates<br />

may be satisfactory but motorized gates must be<br />

considered if automatic operation is required. A<br />

trashrack should normally be provided to keep<br />

debris from entering the canal. Cleaning of the<br />

trashracks can be either manual or automated as<br />

desirable. Design velocities of up to 1.5 meters<br />

per second through these trashracks are per-<br />

missible if they can be cleaned. Many alter-<br />

natives are possible in the design of the diversion<br />

dam. A low dam in a narrow channel should be<br />

designed as an overflow structure. For most<br />

cases, this would require a low concrete<br />

monolith or a rock fill dam with a central con-<br />

crete wall.1 For very small dams, use of timber<br />

cribs or timber buttresses should be considered<br />

although they may need to be replaced once or<br />
