manualmente o travesarios corredizos instalados
manualmente, para control ya que normalmente
estan’an cerrados solo durante largos periodos cuan-
do no se estk generando energia.
removable flash boards may be installed on the
dam during low-flow periods.
Design of the power canal must consider
steady-state and transient operation. The mass
of the water involved in the total system makes it
impossible to make rapid changes (increases or
decreases) in power generation. For startup, it is
necessary to open the gates at the upper end of
the canal long enough in advance to insure that
flow into the penstocks will not remove all water
in the canal. A forebay at the downstream end of
the canal must have a large enough capacity to
provide water for small changes in generation
while the flow in the canal is returning to
equilibrium. This need will arise if load changes
will occur without sufficient warning time to
enable a change in gate setting to be made at
the dam. In addition, a spillway must be provided
at the downstream end of the canal to provide for
discharge of excess flow without damage in
case of sudden shutdown of the turbines, failure
of the upstream gates to operated properly, or
the entrance of flood flows into the canal from
either the river or a drainage area along the
canal.
At the upper end of the penstocks, manuallyu-
operated valves or gates, or manually-insta!!ed
stoplogs can be used for control since they will
normally be closed only during extended periods
when power is not being generated. A trashrack
should be installed in front of the control struc-
ture to control the entrance of floating debris. In-
lets to the penstocks must be submerged deeply
enough to prevent the formation of a vortex
which will reduce the flow capacity and possibly
introduce air to the penstock. Required
submergence is given approximately by:
H, = 0.72 V 6--- (1)
where V is the velocity in the intake pipe
(meters/second), and D is the gate height
(meters). Submergence H, (meters) is measured
from the water surface to the crown of the pipe.
Hc (meters) is measured from the water surface
to the crown of the pipe.
Penstocks are normally constructed from steel
but wood stave, fiberglass, and polyvinyl chloride
pipe should be considered for small facilities.
Wall thickness and diameter of the penstock can
theoretically be optimized by considering the
cost of material and the cost of power lost
through resistance to flow. However, in reality,
manufacturing savings will almost always lead to
a uniform size and wall thickness for a small
