Inspection during emergency periods must be
made by someone experienced and quite familiar
with project operation, usually an engineer or
someone trained by an engineer.
Low-Head Designs
The most common types of low-head turbines
are the propeller, bulb, and tube types. Various
proprietary designs of small units have been
developed with particular trade names, but in
general all fall into one of these three categories.
The rim generator is a fourth type which has the
advantage of having the generator armature as a
part of the runner, thus, eliminating one set of
moving parts and requiring smaller space than a
tube turbine and associated generator.
In almost all cases, a low-head facility will be
incorporated in a low dam. In generai, the design
will require a spillway to pass flood flows, a
power house (or at least a deck) on which to
mount units, and the dam itself. The design
challenge arises in developing a safe, yet
economically feasible design.
The most common structure would be an earth
or rockfill dam with an overflow spillway in one
abutment and with turbines and generators in-
stalled in a concrete gravity section near the op-
posite abutment. Figure 6 shows a typical layout
of this type. One of the problems with low-head
developments of this type is that flood flows over
the spillway increase tailwater elevation
downstream. This produces a decrease in the
operating head on the turbine. In addition, the
spillway must be located so that flows from the
spillway do not tend to build a gravel bar below
the turbine outlets, backing water up and further
reducing the operating head on the turbines.
Because of the low-head involved it is also
desirable to make conduits leading to turbines
and draft tubes leading from them as smooth
and free of bends as possible in order to
minimize the energy losses produced by
resistance to flow. Bulb, tube, and rim-generator
turbines are particularly well-adapted to this need
because of their straigh-through flow
characteristics. Figure 7 shows typical sections
for the four different types of low-head turbines.
The most expensive portion of the flow
passages for these low-head units are the transi-
tions from rectangular to circular and back to
rectsngular again. In each case, gates or
