doble-masa. Aqlti no presentamos m&s procedimien-
duration mejoran’an 10s estudios hidrologicos.
logia - no 10s habra) existen ciertas tkcnicas
region. Las tkcnicas valian desde aquellas que
calculan 10s promedios de las corrientes a procedi-
mientos de modelacion complicados que requieren
las competencias especificas de hidrologicos
experimentados.
available at a particular site (in fact this is
probably the first law of hydrology - they won’t
be), analytical techniques are available if data is
available in the region. The techniques vary from
those that will estimate mean discharges to more
complicated modeling procedures requiring
specific competences by very experienced
hydrologists.
In areas in which physical characteristics are
common and precipitation relatively uniform
across the area, discharge will be found to be
highly correlated with drainage area. In its
simplest form, discharges may often be propor-
tioned up or downstream from an existing gauge
on a ratio of drainage area. In New England
(USA), rules of thumb (Mayo, undated) have been
established whereby estimates of Q values
applicable to a flow-duration analysis can be
made for quick estimation of hydro potential. In
Idaho (Gladwell, et. al., 1979) estimates of mean
annual discharge were determined using
existing flow data and maps of mean annual
precipitation (modified by physical
characteristics).
Where several physical or hydrologic character-
istics modify the runoff significantly, multiple
regression techniques have been used to define
the flow statistics. A general relationship widely
used for this purpose is:
DSi = a, Xp xza2 X3a3 . . . xnan
where,
DSt= the flow statistic of interest; e.g., mean,
standard deviation, mean annual flood, etc.
Xi = catchment or hydrologic characteristics
ai = regional coefficients
The case of mean discharge as a function of
area is, of course, but a simple case of the
general model.
In regions with large orographic influences, the
precipitation distribution with elevation can be
usefully applied. Precipitation maps, in particular,
may be used to integrate estimated precipitation
over all or parts of the drainage area. This tech-
nique was used in the ldaho study previously
referred to. In Western Washington, regression
equations were developed (Gladwell, 1970) that .
successfully described varieties of multiple-
peaked annual hydrographs (monthly bases),
