debajo de1 m&s bajo nivel controlable.
corn0 sigue:
Rendimiento. Total de aguas corridas; incluye afluen-
cia m&s el flujo sub&lveo.
323
Cycle - a regularly recurring succession of events
such as the cycle of the seasons. Use of cycle to
describe a group of wet years followed or preceded by
a group of dry years is to be avoided.
Dead Storage - the volume in a reservoir below the
lowest controllable level.
Debt Service - principal and interest payments on
the debt used to finance the project.
Demand - see Load.
Dependable Capacity - the load carrying ability of a
hydropower plant under adverse hydrologic conditions
for the time interval and period specified of a par-
ticular system load.
Dependable Yield, n-years - the minimum supply of a
given water development that is available on demand,
with the understanding that lower yields will occur
once in n-years, on the average.
Depletion - the progressive withdrawal of water from
surface or groundwater reservoirs at a rate greater
than that of replenishment.
Direct runoff - the runoff entering stream channels
promptly after rainfall or snowmelt. Superimposed on
base runoff, it forms the bulk of the hydrograph of a
flood.
See aiso surface runoff. The terms base runoff and
direct runoff are time classifications of runoff. The
terms groundwater runoff and surface runoff are
classifications according to source.
Discharge - in its simplest concept discharge means
outflow; therefore, the use of this term is not
restricted as to course or Ibcation, and it can be ap-
plied to describe the flow of water from a pipe or from
a drainage basin. If the discharge occurs in some
course or channel, it is correct to speak of the
discharge of a canal or of a river. It is also correct to
speak of the discharge of a canal or stream into a
lake, a stream, or an ocean. (See also Streamflow and
Runoff).
The discharge of drainage basins is distinguished
as follows:
Yield. Total water runout; includes runoff plus
underflow.
Runoff. That part of water yield that appears
in streams.
Streamflow. The actual flow in streams, whether
or not subject to regulation, or underflow.
Each of these terms can be reported in total
volumes or time rates.
Diversion - the taking of water from a stream or
other body of water into a canal, pipe, or other con-
duit.
Double-mass Curve - a plot on arithmetic cross-
section paper of the cumulated values of one variable
