A simple nlsthod for integrating a small<br />

hydropower unit with an existing electric system<br />

is to isolate a portion of the load on the existing<br />

system and serve it solely from the hydro station.<br />

To do this, the station must have a synchronous<br />

generator. A normally-open switch could be<br />

closed to serve this isolated load from the ex-<br />

isting source during periods when the hydro unit<br />

is shut down. An interlock ensures that the<br />

switch would not close while the generator is<br />

operating. This arrangement is shown in Figure 3.<br />

Many existing distribution lines are protected<br />

by reclosers which respond to faults by briefly<br />

de-enargizing the line, and then reclosing to<br />

restore service in the likely event that the fault<br />

was temporary. This operation may be repeated<br />
