Humberio Egoavil Puccinelli
agraria. La mayoria de esta localidades tienen pobla-
ciones inferiores a 10s 2000 habitantes, sin embargo
existen pueblos, con poblacion superior a esta can-
tidad.
coma rural. En nuestro pais, se debe calificar coma
rural a toda poblacion cuya actividad economica sea
zado nivcl satisfactorio, existiendo valles importantes
us .arios.
7,000,000, solo 9.6% tienen servicios electricos.
kWh/fam.
Electropeni viene implementando pequenos proyec-
tos de electrification de caracter rural. Para este pro-
posit0 se tienen 10s siguientes programas:
nation has found necessary in carrying out such
projects.
Status of Rural Electrification in Peru
Most of the rural population in Peru is
clustered in communities or villages which do
not spread into the fields used for agricultural
purposes. The majority of these communities
have a population below 2,000 people, however
some towns do have a higher number of in-
habitants. For this reason, population should not
be used as a criterion to qualify a community as
“rural”. In our country, all communities whose
economic activity is agricultural or dedicated to
livestock and their derivatives should be con-
sidered rural.
Rural electrification in Peru has not yet reach-
ed a satisfactcry level since there are important
valleys and numerous isolated communities with
no electrical service and whose energy consump-
tion is still low. The present low level of rural elec-
trification is due primarily to strong needs for in-
vestment in electrical systems located in regions
of difficult topography, without an adequate road
infrastructure, which increases the cost of the
works. Other important factors contributing to
this situation are the scarcity of economic-
financial resources and the lack of adequate
policies and organization to facilitate develop-
ment of rural electrification. This is reflected by
the fact that, out of a rural population on the
order of 7 million, only 9.6% have electrical ser-
vice. The domestic consumption of rural electrici-
ty is on the order of 25 kwhimonth and the an-
nual usage for public illumination in the villages
is about 40kWhlfamily.
Electroperu has been implementing small rural
electrification projects of the following types:
