Consideraciones Hidr6ulicas
Fundamentales
PkW
donde,
&He
= 111 (Unidades Inglesas)
.
0 ?kW = 9.51 &He (unidades metricas)
Basic Hydraulic Considerations
Hydroelectric energy technology has been
around for a long time. The basics are rather
simple:
QHe
pkW = -ii-jji (English units)
where,
PkWiS power in kilowatts,
Q is water flow rate in cubic feet per
second,
H is the net head available to the
turbine/generator in feet, and
e is the overall turbine/generator efficiency.
06 PkW = 9.81 QHe (metric units)
where,
Pkwis power in kilowatts,
Q is in cubic meters per second,
H is net head in meters, and
e is, as before, efficiency of the system.
Thus, some of the first things an engineer
must determine are (1) how much water is
available in a river (and when), and (2) how much
head (drop) is potentially available (and when).
From the basic information, he will begin to con-
sider vlarious configurations of dams, penstocks,
etc. - including the type and numbers of tur-
bines - in order to minimize the cost while pro-
ducing the desired amount of power. He usually
conceives a number of possible configurations,
each of which must be evaluated in more or less
detail.
The turbines that an engineer will consider for
modern systems basically fall into two
categories: impulse and reaction. There are
basic differences in their characteristics that
should be understood.
!mpulse Turbines
Gn this kind of turbine, “buckets” on the
periphery of a wheel are moved by the force of a
jet (or sets of jetsj. The available (net) head is
converted to kinetic energy, of which a portion
creates the torque. Generally, impuise turbines
are used for high heads, although at feast one
modern design is efficiently used for commer-
cial developments in the low-head range. For
mini low-head systems, the Banki turbine has
