petitive with the Haber-Bosch proces&4 using<br />

natural gas as a feed-stock for the process to<br />

produce nitrogen fertilizer in the form of am-<br />

monia. With the marked increase in the cost of<br />

natural gas during recent years, however, it ap-<br />

pears that a properly designed electric arc pro-<br />

cess for fertilizer production may now be<br />

economically feasible in certain areas. For<br />

several years, the Kettering Research Laboratory<br />

has been developing small-scale, electric arc<br />

systems for the production of nitrogen fertilizer<br />

near the sites where the fertilizer is needed.5.8<br />

On-site production of nitrogen fertilizer<br />

eliminates the transportation and distribution fix-<br />

ed costs responsibie for a large proportion of fer-
