costo total de1 proyecto y a veces algunos sistemas
ener@a utilizada.
tos de 10 kW, 100 kW and 1000 kW.
than U.S. $0.10 per pair, and this procedure can
safely be performed by any electric utility
employee.
As the system becomes financially strong,
revenue from line extensions and service to in-
dividual consumers should be averaged in with
existing consumers’ revenue to assure that
system averages will alwa.ys yield a positive
operati,lg margin. This will, of course, dilute the
average number of customers per transformer
and per kilometer of line, but local experience
levels will, by this time, enable system manage-
ment to establish its own criteria for avoiding
long-range financial problems. We believe the
ultimate objective should be area coverage ser-
vice to all.
Typical Distribution Systems
Three small distribution systems are discussed
to show the range and degree of distribution
facilities required for projects of 10 kW, 100 kW
and 1000 kW size. Each size has its own
characteristics and will indicate the complexity
and planning required to serve loads from a
similar mini/micro hydropower system.
10 kW
A 10 kW distribution system is small enough
that secondary voltage circuits can handle the
power outp~rt. Z+cause the unit is so small, the
cost Pl$’ ?‘?,,-; 1.: r tFre i;ivi! tiorks, turbine, and
gener&iol- wilE ifkely be quite high. Hence, “Ihe
electrica; distribution should be as simple and
cheap as possible Tho load center for this small
system should be within one kilometer of the
generator site to I/m!? the voltage drop. Sites of
this potential size and with a load center greater
than 1 km away are most likely to be unfeasible.
100 kW
Generating units and distribution svstems of
50 kW or more are generally ttirPP pP&se
systems. Where the load center is greater than 1
km from the generating site, the voltage can be
stepped up to a standard distribution voltage to
reduce the energy losses in the conductor and
the voltage drop in remote areas. Single phase
lines serve secondary transformers directly and
must all carry approximately equal loads for the
three phases to be balanced. The primary feeder
protection is coordinated with the tap fuses such
that faults on the tap lines will not interrupt ser-
vice in the remaining system.
