JEZIK U UPOTREBI / LANGUAGE IN USE
of extralinguistic reality. And given that no language is finite, given that each one is in
ferment and can have „holes“ in its systems, both its own freedom and that of its speakers
constantly shift their boundaries. In the network of public communication channels which
are under institutionalized or non-institutionalized control, the freedom of language is
limited not only on the plane of expression but also on the plane of content. In multilingual
milieus, one’s freedom of choice is determined by language policy, which plans the
status of a language and thus indirectly decides on its place in the „market“; such a place
may or may not be prestigious, and depending on extralinguistic factors may in time
even disappear. Even in cases of social conflict, language is always the means (language
as freedom) and not the cause, since its communication function has given way to the
symbolic, value-bearing function. And when the functioning of language serves as a Barthesian
or Lacanian model for perceiving all other social phenomena, language closes the
boundaries of freedom and freedom is „in the prison-house of language“.
Keywords: language, freedom, norm, creativity, public communication, language manipulation.
