MOTHER TONGUE COMPETENCE AND SOCIO-
PROFESSIONAL INTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY 1
Abstract. The original text was a lecture read by the author at the meeting Etats
Généraux des Langues in Paris, in 1989. Now it has been amended by some classical
and modern references. Starting from mother tongue education (based on experiences
gathered in Hungary), the three main stages (i.e. family, school, and the
working life) of linguistic socialization are presented. Extra attention is paid to the
problems of discrimination (resulting sometimes in illiteracy), immigration, and
socio-professional integration into a new community. Various remarks are added,
among others the recommendation to include LSP into mother tongue education.
The author claims that revolutionary changes are necessary for an efficient mother
tongue education in the new age.
Keywords: mother tongue education, linguistic socialization, community, integration,
profession, immigrants, adult language education, LSP.
Since I had a misfortune with my contribution to the previous Bugarski-Festschrift,
I wanted to present something safe. Therefore I have worked for a considerable
time on a distinctive feature analysis of the Runic script used peripherally
in Hungary up until the 19th century, but the topic kept on growing. If ever I
finish it, I shall dedicate it to my old friend in Beograd who was my (indirect)
teacher in writing matters: Ranko.
He was kind enough to offer a formerly read lecture of his to my Festschrift
(Bugarski 2001). My second choice was then to offer him also the text of
an unpublished lecture of mine. I selected one which was presented at a solemn
meeting Etats Généraux des Langues in Paris, in 1989. Meanwhile we witnessed
a turning point in the history in both of our countries, in Europe, maybe in the
world. 21 years later, I developed the idea of inserting short comments on some
1 I am indebted to Ms E. Gúti-Tóth (Assistant Professor, University of Pécs) for typing the manuscript
of the original lecture, to Mr J. Horváth (Associate Professor, University of Pécs) for monitoring
the English text, and to Ms É. Szöllősy (editor of the journal Modern Nyelvoktatás) for editorial
work.
