pal, mate, dude, babe and suchlike in colloquial use. It has to be contextualised in
such a way that it comes as a result of what was said before. It usually comes as a
second proposition of the same speaker (13) or as dispreferred second:
(13) A: Give me that book this afternoon.
(A: Daćeš mi tu knjigu danas popodne.)
B: Sorry, pal.
(B: Izvini, druže.)
The context is important in order for it not to be confused with true apology. Yet,
felicity conditions are halfway between substantive and ritualistic apology. The
formula is somewhat different.

The compensatory phrase is followed by but, which signals that something
unpleasant is to follow. We shall see such signals with some other types of ritualistic
apologies.
4. PARDON? Could you repeat, please? The English apology phrase for
this particular illocutionary force would be I beg your pardon or pardon. Possible
variations could be Excuse me? and Sorry, could you repeat that? The more formal
I’m sorry and less formal excuse me, even pardon – all are translated as ritualistic
izvinite in Montenegrin for this type of apology. In the given cultural script
this frequently heard phrase could be alternated with a question or a directive:
