JEZIK U UPOTREBI / LANGUAGE IN USE
Macedonian was not included in the official U.S. list of races of that time. While
the association of race with racism (and Nazi genocide) has led to modifications
in the term’s use, it continues to be deployed as an organizing category by various
governments, including the United States, where features as disparate as melanin
content, chronotopal origin, and surname have been used for defining racial or
quasi-racial categories such as ‘Black’, ‘African-American’, and ‘Hispanic’.
My point here is that a judicious comparison of ‘colonial knowledge’ in
Southeast Asia (cf. Shamsul 2000), ‘imperial knowledge’ in Southeast Europe, as
well as the subsequent discourses that try to account for these knowledges at the
risk of reifying them, can be better understood from the comparative perspective
of a crescent outside the box, as it were. 26 Such a comparison also encourages us
to examine not only how a state or empire shapes identities, but how identities
resist, acknowledge, ignore, or are co-opted by a state or empire. And finally, to
circle back to the crescent, in a world where ‘sounds and nouns’ carry both popular
and political appeal, the linguistic role of Islam at these two ends of its extent
bears further investigation.
26 Socialist/communist knowledge, regardless of whether in Southeast Europe or Southeast Asia,
ends up utilizing and thus reinforcing ethno-nationalism for its own ends, thus producing results
comparable to the colonial and/or imperial (see Verdery 1993).
