PhDs. The best proof of how seriously he took his obligations as supervisor, and
the nicest way some of those supervised have expressed their appreciation of his
guidance, is a volume they dedicated to him: Language, Society, Cognition – For
Professor Ranko Bugarski from his Students (ed. by Duška Klikovac and Katarina
Rasulić). This title contains three key words symbolising both his own work
in linguistics and that of those he has taught.
In addition to his services connected with the official bodies of Yugoslav
and international applied linguistics, our honouree has participated, frequently as
a keynote speaker, in a large number of congresses and other scholarly conferences
at home and abroad. As a participant he has been among the few who always
come prepared, listen to as many papers as possible, discuss what they have
heard, answer any questions, tell an anecdote or two over lunch or dinner, only to
return to linguistic topics afterwards.
We may conclude by saying that Professor Bugarski was able to accomplish
all of the foregoing because he has worked overtime every day for fifty
years. 2

This Festschrift contains contributions from different linguistic disciplines
and research areas, mostly represented in the recipient’s own work: general, descriptive
and applied linguistics, historical linguistics and history of linguistics,
sociolinguistics and social psychology of language, psycholinguistics and cognitive
linguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, language policy and planning.
Invitations were sent out to a number of colleagues at home and abroad,
following the honouree’s suggestion that the list should not include any of the
contributors to the two volumes previously dedicated to him (History and Perspectives
of Language Study: Papers in Honor of Ranko Bugarski, ed. by Olga
Mišeska Tomić and Milorad Radovanović, Amsterdam/ Philadelphia: John Benjamins,
2000, and the already mentioned one, written and edited by his former
students). A few of the invited were unable to prepare their papers within the
time limit, due to other commitments. The language of the papers was left to the
authors’ choice; half of them were submitted in English – hence the bilingual title
and introductory matter.
