ON LANGUAGE AND THINKING, ONCE AGAIN
Summary
This paper seeks to define some fundamental mental properties that support both language
and general cognition. Our hypothesis, based on evidence from linguistic research
and the findings of evolutionary biology, is that there is no substantial difference between
these two phenomena. They are both based on two mental operations: merge (the fusion
of elements) and abstraction (a product of global perception), which enabled our mind to
use conceptualisation and syntax.
