JEZIK U UPOTREBI / LANGUAGE IN USE
To refer to Sercu (2005: 30) once again, future L2 teachers need to be ‘willing to
teach intercultural competence’, but also ‘to know how to do so’. They need to
develop the tools, strategies, and techniques that would enable them to observe
and understand culturally shaped elements of communication beyond the visible,
and the tools, strategies and techniques that would enable them to include intercultural
competence teaching in their future work with L2 learners. Therefore,
any ‘initiatives taken to interculturalize pre-service and in-service teacher training
and foreign language education’ should be fully supported (Sercu 2005: 103).
Finally, since it is repeatedly pointed out by both theoreticians and researchers
that the affective component seems to play the crucial role in developing ICC, the
essential first step towards ‘interculturalization’ may be helping both L2 teachers
and L2 learners realise that intercultural communication is ‘an enriching experience’
(Byram et al. 2002: 10), and not a threat to anyone’s identity.
