In this discussion, the characteristics of the socialist and liberal registers of names
of institutions and enterprises are analysed, primarily based on frequency of appearance
of certain categories of names, as well as on semantic and pragmatic effectiveness and
morpho-syntactic correctness. In the socialist register of naming (SRN) dominant categories
are ‘great’ names (Liberty, Equality, Future, Progress), heroic names and ‘small’
names, while in the liberal register of naming (LRN) dominant are personal first names,
abbreviations derived from dominant first names and surnames, as well as descriptive
names. Names in SRN are semantically and pragmatically more effective, because they
preserve the entire symbolic function, while names in LRN are less so, as they preserve a
reduced indexical function. SRN is considerably more correct morpho-syntactically than
LRN. SRN is a more closed system of naming and is monolingual, while LRN is open and
bilingual (mostly with English). Both these systems of naming are important components
in the formation of communication worlds and their discourses.
