ANGLOSERBIAN AND SERGLISH: TWO VARIETIES OF SERBIAN
INFLUENCED BY ENGLISH
Summary
The paper discusses the influence of English on Serbian, manifested as changes at the levels
of orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, resulting
from cultural contact with English and anglophone cultures. Starting from the theoretical
postulates of contact linguistics, sociolinguistic theories of language stratification, codeswitching
and borrowing, and on the basis of empirical research and relevant studies in
the areas of sociolinguistics, lexicology and lexicography, it can be assumed that there
are actually two varieties of Serbian developed under the influence of English – one spoken
in Serbian-speaking countries and the other in anglophone countries. These varieties
can respectively be labelled Angloserbian (according to Vasić, Prćić, Nejgebauer 2001;
Prćić 2005) and Serglish (Serblish), following popular usage in the Serbian diaspora. The
varieties have been described and differentiated along several sociolinguistic parameters
(aspects of the social situation of language use such as the speakers, their motivation,
language status, etc), as well as linguistic ones (elements of language structure at the
levels of ortoghraphy, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and the
medim where a particular variety is used).
