A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF RANKO BUGARSKI<br />

This extract contains some basic information drawn from the fuller biography<br />

above, supplementing that already given in the English versions of the<br />

introductory texts.<br />

Ranko Bugarski was born on 1 January 1933 in Sarajevo, where he completed<br />

his studies in English and German philology in 1957. He did postgraduate<br />

work at University College London and Columbia University, New York. His<br />

PhD dissertation (University of Belgrade, 1969) was a study of the prepositions<br />

over, under, above, below and beneath in contemporary English. Since 1961 he<br />

has been associated with the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, where he became<br />

Professor of English and General Linguistics.<br />

He was a Fulbright Lecturer in Linguistics in the United States in 1969/70,<br />

based at the University of Chicago. He taught courses and gave lectures at<br />

nearly all the universities of the former Yugoslavia and was a guest lecturer at<br />

over 30 universities abroad (London, Oxford, Paris-Sorbonne, Leiden, Vienna,<br />

Munich, Cracow, Warsaw, Barcelona, Columbia, California-Berkeley, Texas-<br />

Austin, Washington-Seattle, Chicago, Cornell, Pittsburgh, Sydney-Macquarie,<br />

Melbourne-Monash, etc.).<br />

The main areas of his research include the structure of English, contrastive<br />

grammar, general and applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and history of linguistics.<br />

He is the author of 19 books and scores of articles published in many countries<br />

and in several languages.<br />

Europaea; member, European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Salzburg); corresponding<br />

member, Centre for Research on Multilingualism (Brussels); Council<br />

of Europe expert on Regional or Minority Languages (Strasbourg); Honorary<br />

President, English-Speaking Union (Serbian branch); national correspondent,<br />

European Sociolinguistic Bibliography (Tübingen/Berlin); advisory board<br />

member, Historiographia Linguistica and Studies in the History of Linguistics<br />

(Amsterdam/Philadelphia), Multilingua (Berlin/New York).
