A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF RANKO BUGARSKI
This extract contains some basic information drawn from the fuller biography
above, supplementing that already given in the English versions of the
introductory texts.
Ranko Bugarski was born on 1 January 1933 in Sarajevo, where he completed
his studies in English and German philology in 1957. He did postgraduate
work at University College London and Columbia University, New York. His
PhD dissertation (University of Belgrade, 1969) was a study of the prepositions
over, under, above, below and beneath in contemporary English. Since 1961 he
has been associated with the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, where he became
Professor of English and General Linguistics.
He was a Fulbright Lecturer in Linguistics in the United States in 1969/70,
based at the University of Chicago. He taught courses and gave lectures at
nearly all the universities of the former Yugoslavia and was a guest lecturer at
over 30 universities abroad (London, Oxford, Paris-Sorbonne, Leiden, Vienna,
Munich, Cracow, Warsaw, Barcelona, Columbia, California-Berkeley, Texas-
Austin, Washington-Seattle, Chicago, Cornell, Pittsburgh, Sydney-Macquarie,
Melbourne-Monash, etc.).
The main areas of his research include the structure of English, contrastive
grammar, general and applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and history of linguistics.
He is the author of 19 books and scores of articles published in many countries
and in several languages.
