March 22. The Book <strong>of</strong> Tempeh, extensively revised<br />

second edition by Shurtleff <strong>and</strong> Aoyagi, published by Harper<br />

& Row. New bibliography (374 entries), <strong>history</strong> chapter, <strong>and</strong><br />

list <strong>of</strong> tempeh producers.<br />

March 26. Soyfoods Association’s T<strong>of</strong>u St<strong>and</strong>ards (7th<br />

draft) presented to eight senior <strong>of</strong>fi cials at the U.S. Food <strong>and</strong><br />

Drug Administration’s <strong>Center</strong> for Food Safety <strong>and</strong> Applied<br />

Nutrition, in Washington, DC, by Tom Timmins (Head <strong>of</strong><br />

SAA St<strong>and</strong>ards Committee), Gary Barat (President <strong>of</strong> SAA),<br />

Steve McNamara <strong>and</strong> Tom Donegan (SAA Food & Drug<br />

attorneys). The FDA group hears an hour long presentation<br />

on t<strong>of</strong>u, the st<strong>and</strong>ards, <strong>and</strong> the Soyfoods Association <strong>of</strong><br />

America.<br />

March. Soyarella (later renamed Soy Mozzarella),<br />

a t<strong>of</strong>u-based cheese, is introduced. It becomes an instant<br />

hit. Distributed by Neshaminy Valley Natural Foods <strong>of</strong><br />

Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, it is labeled as “nondairy,”<br />

yet it melts, <strong>and</strong> it tastes like cheese. Shrouded in<br />

secrecy, its manufacturer is unknown <strong>and</strong> the ingredients<br />

are questionable. It is sold in large blocks <strong>and</strong> labeled at<br />

individual stores.<br />

March. American Soybean Assoc. launches a campaign<br />

among its members to write USAID <strong>and</strong> encourage them to<br />

cancel support for U.S. programs (such as INTSOY) aiding<br />

<strong>soy</strong>bean production in Third World nations. The campaign is<br />

successful.<br />

April 1. INTSOY signs a new cooperative agreement<br />

with USAID. Their work will henceforth focus on <strong>soy</strong>bean<br />

utilization. The shift toward utilization began in 1983 <strong>and</strong><br />

all work on <strong>soy</strong>bean production <strong>and</strong> varietal development<br />

stopped in Aug. 1986.<br />

April. Tempe: An Annotated Bibliography, compiled by<br />

Siagian <strong>and</strong> S<strong>of</strong>i a in Indonesia. Containing 273 references,<br />

it is the fi rst bibliography to introduce the extensive<br />

Indonesian-language research on tempeh, the majority <strong>of</strong><br />

which has been published since 1980.<br />

April 15-16. International Symposium on Tempeh held<br />

in Jakarta, sponsored by the Indonesian Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health.<br />

April. Central Soya buys Griffi th Laboratories’ line <strong>of</strong><br />

protein products.<br />

May 31. Barricini Foods acquires Farm Foods, which<br />

then becomes a trade name for Barricini’s natural/health<br />

foods line <strong>of</strong> non-dairy frozen desserts, including the<br />

May. Morinaga, one <strong>of</strong> Japan’s largest dairy companies,<br />

establishes Morinaga Nutritional Foods, Inc., a subsidiary<br />

with <strong>of</strong>fi ces in Los Angeles, to focus on promoting their<br />

long-life t<strong>of</strong>u in America.<br />

May. At the 6th Annual Natural Foods Merch<strong>and</strong>iser<br />

Merch<strong>and</strong>ising Awards, <strong>soy</strong>foods do well. Miso Mustard by<br />

American Natural Foods <strong>and</strong> Malteds by Westbrae win gold<br />

medals. Ah Soy by Great Eastern Sun wins a silver.<br />

May. S<strong>of</strong>t T<strong>of</strong>u Cheese, a non-dairy cream cheese<br />

cultured in miso, launched by Simply Natural, Inc.<br />

June. T<strong>of</strong>u Topper launched by Worthington Foods.<br />

June. Ralston Purina publishes its 1985 Consumer<br />

Attitudes Monitor. Soy Protein in Foods, based on a<br />

nationwide survey <strong>of</strong> 628 adults. Indicates positive attitudes<br />

toward <strong>soy</strong> protein <strong>and</strong> <strong>soy</strong>foods.<br />

July 19. Shamrock Capital, a private company headed<br />

by Roy Disney, buys Central Soya, a publicly owned<br />

corporation. Agreement to buy was announced April 2.<br />

July. Soy Supreme, spray-dried t<strong>of</strong>u powder, launched<br />

by Oberg Foods Div. <strong>of</strong> St. Peter Creamery.<br />

July 31. T<strong>of</strong>u Time’s sales <strong>of</strong> T<strong>of</strong>utti increased more<br />

than sevenfold last year to $17,114,886 as compared with<br />

$2,361,391 for the previous year. Net income increased<br />

nearly 100-fold to $2,006,451.<br />

July. New Gallup survey on vegetarianism <strong>of</strong> 1,033<br />

Americans shows that millions are eating less meat <strong>and</strong><br />

tens <strong>of</strong> millions agree with the move away from meat. 72%<br />

disagree with what used to be the st<strong>and</strong>ard notion: “The<br />

vegetarian diet is just a fad that will pass.” A majority (52%)<br />

believe that “no one really needs to eat meat more than once<br />

or twice a week.”<br />

Aug. The DE-VAU-GE <strong>soy</strong><strong>milk</strong> plant in West Germany<br />

starts production. Built by STS, with 4,000 liters/hour <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>soy</strong><strong>milk</strong> capacity, they make Granose <strong>and</strong> GranoVita br<strong>and</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>soy</strong><strong>milk</strong>.<br />

Aug. Lightlife Meatless T<strong>of</strong>u Pups (hot dogs)<br />

introduced by Tempehworks / Lightlife Foods <strong>of</strong> Greenfi eld,<br />

Massachusetts. The product sold nearly $250,000 in the next<br />

10 months.<br />

Sept. Soyfoods <strong>Center</strong> introduces SOYA, a<br />

computerized bibliographic database on <strong>soy</strong>bean utilization,<br />

<strong>history</strong>, nutrition, processing, marketing, <strong>and</strong> production.<br />

Contains 18,500 references from 1100 B.C. to the present.<br />

Sept. 30. Fearn Natural Foods in Illinois sold by Louis<br />

Richard to Modern Products, Inc. in Milwaukee.<br />

Sept. 30 to Oct. 4. Tropical Soybean Workshop held at<br />

the International Institute <strong>of</strong> Tropical Agriculture (IITA),<br />

Ibadan, Nigeria. Proceedings are published in 1987 as<br />

Soybeans for the Tropics. Also this year IITA established a<br />

<strong>soy</strong>bean utilization unit.<br />
