to California from Japan.<br />

Jan. The Soy Plant, a t<strong>of</strong>u cooperative in Ann Arbor,<br />

Michigan, fi les for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It is soon<br />

purchased by Bruce Rose <strong>of</strong> Rosewood Products, Inc.<br />

Feb. Soya Newsletter, a 12-page, bimonthly publication<br />

costing $96/year, is launched by Soyatech <strong>of</strong> Bar Harbor,<br />

Maine. Publishers are Peter Golbitz <strong>and</strong> Sharyn Kingma,<br />

former owners <strong>of</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong> T<strong>of</strong>u Works. The publication<br />

quickly proves itself to be the world’s best English-language<br />

publication on <strong>soy</strong>foods. By October, paid circulation tops<br />

900 in 20 countries.<br />

Feb. American Soybean Association petitions the U.S.<br />

Food <strong>and</strong> Drug Administration to require food manufacturers<br />

to be more specifi c in labeling food products that contain<br />

highly saturated imported tropical fats (palm, palm kernel,<br />

<strong>and</strong> coconut oils). The petition includes results <strong>of</strong> a<br />

supermarket survey <strong>of</strong> 1,555 foods containing vegetable oils.<br />

43% <strong>of</strong> the labels list multiple choice or generic vegetable<br />

oil ingredients which hides from the consumer the fact that<br />

the products contain highly saturated tropical fats. Imported<br />

tropical fats displace the equivalent <strong>of</strong> oil derived from 171<br />

million bushels <strong>of</strong> <strong>soy</strong>beans. Herewith begin the great “Fat<br />

Wars” <strong>of</strong> 1987-88.<br />

Feb. Lite Lite T<strong>of</strong>utti introduced by T<strong>of</strong>utti Br<strong>and</strong>s, Inc.<br />

This non-dairy frozen dessert contains only 90 calories per<br />

4-ounce serving. It soon becomes a big hit.<br />

Feb. Ah Soy in Tetra Brik cartons launched by great<br />

Eastern Sun.<br />

Feb. Options trading on futures for <strong>soy</strong>bean oil <strong>and</strong> meal<br />

opened on Chicago Board <strong>of</strong> Trade.<br />

March 4. The Federal Grain Inspection Service rules that<br />

<strong>soy</strong>bean oil may be used to control grain dust in elevators.<br />

This voids the Barnham patent <strong>and</strong> opens up a large potential<br />

new market for <strong>soy</strong> oil, which is in surplus.<br />

March. Great Shake <strong>soy</strong><strong>milk</strong> launched by Noble Soya in<br />

India. Sold in Tetra Brik cartons in mango, strawberry, <strong>and</strong><br />

chocolate favors, it is the country’s most heavily promoted<br />

<strong>soy</strong><strong>milk</strong> to date, but gets <strong>of</strong>f to a slow start.<br />

March 16-18. First International Congress on<br />

Vegetarian Nutrition held in Washington, D.C., sponsored<br />

by eight Seventh-day Adventist universities <strong>and</strong> health care<br />

organizations, <strong>and</strong> three SDA food companies, plus S.E.<br />

Ryk<strong>of</strong>f/Sexton.<br />

March. Vita<strong>soy</strong> Vitabrations, a newsletter, starts being<br />

published by Vita<strong>soy</strong> USA.<br />

March 31. Hong Kong Soya Bean Products Co. Ltd.,<br />

makers <strong>of</strong> Vita<strong>soy</strong>, move into a large new plant (370,000<br />

square feet costing $20 million) in the New Territories. Sales<br />

<strong>of</strong> Vita<strong>soy</strong> in 1987 is projected to be 126 million packs.<br />

April 1. Tempehworks, Inc., America’s fi rst major<br />

tempeh producer from Greenfi eld, Massachusetts, changes its<br />

name to Lightlife Foods, Inc. In recent years, T<strong>of</strong>u Pups have<br />

become the company’s bestselling product.<br />

April. Stir Fruity, a non-dairy, nonfermented, <strong>soy</strong>-based<br />

<strong>yogurt</strong>, is introduced by Azumaya Inc. <strong>of</strong> San Francisco.<br />

Shelf life problems cause the product to be withdrawn,<br />

causing Azumaya to set aside plans for an $800,000 radio<br />

ad campaign in northern California. The product is soon<br />

back on the market, but in limited distribution <strong>and</strong> with little<br />

promotion. Yet during this year, Azumaya probably passed<br />

House Foods & Yamauchi to become America’s largest t<strong>of</strong>u<br />

producer.<br />

April. Healthy Times, a bimonthly newsletter, starts<br />

being published by Morinaga Nutritional Foods <strong>of</strong> Los<br />

Angeles, makers <strong>of</strong> Mori-Nu long-life t<strong>of</strong>u, for members <strong>of</strong><br />

the Mori-Nu Health for Life Club. By Aug. 1988 circulation<br />

is up to 10,000; A subscription costs $3 a year.<br />

May 26. T<strong>of</strong>utti Br<strong>and</strong>s Inc. <strong>and</strong> Coca-Cola launch<br />

Cheater’s Delite, a major joint promotion featuring a<br />

90-calorie scoop <strong>of</strong> Lite Lite T<strong>of</strong>utti <strong>and</strong> a 1-calorie glass
