Ex UGANDA :
I have learnt with grief and deep sorrow of the sudden death of His
Holiness Pope Paul VI. I wish on behalf of myself, my family, the Government
and the entire people of Uganda to express to the House of
Cardinais, the Catholic Church and the late Pope's family our deepest
sympathies and condolences. His death has deprived the world of a selfless
man dedicated to peace and love. The world still recalls Pope PauPs
journeys to ali the continents in search and promotion of peace. We in
Uganda vividly remember His Holiness's visit to this country in 1969, and
the humility he displayed in communicating with ali the people from all
walks of life. To me, the death of His Holiness in a personal tragedy, for
I knew him as a friend whom I met several times both in the Vatican and
Uganda and enjoyed his friendliness and his wise counsel. In all my meetings
I found him to have a special liking and attachment to Uganda. I remember
my last meeting with His Holiness, in 1975, at his summer palace Castel
Gandolfo when I was Chairman of the OAU and had useful and fruitful
discussions concerning Africa, Middle East and world affairs in general.
Pope PauPs death is not only a loss to the Catholic Church but to all
mankind. We pray for his soul to rest in eternai peace. Accept, Your
Eminence, the expression of my deepest condolences.
